Key themes included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Workflow integration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Platforms like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwglobal.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KGL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Smart Publish, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proofig.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proofig<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s PubShield, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Reports, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewerzero.ai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ReviewerZero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hum.works\/research-publishers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Alchemist Review demonstrated how multiple integrity signals can be brought together in a single editorial interface. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dataseer.ai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DataSeer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s SnapShot tool demonstrated how agentic LLM technology can be leveraged to support the editorial process and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scitility.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scitility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Vesalius Innovation Award finalist, added to the picture with article-level risk scoring based on co-authorship patterns and retractions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Upstream provenance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Solutions like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/veridatlabs.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veridat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Bench and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/verime.coop\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VeriMe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are moving trust signals earlier in the process \u2014 capturing the when, where and how of data creation, and validating researcher identity in a privacy-preserving way. This was echoed in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thesisai.io\/en\/thesify-ai\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=23218386444&amp;gbraid=0AAAAA_aQWRyrZfn4pDnQnqaewQhkxDxUU&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiAxonKBhC1ARIsAIHq_lsRWZ-vymZeacENb0yV-YvBNvzlKp7SxanVbeveadfLfkqL95UTswAaAlMbEALw_wcB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thesify AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s pitch \u2014 using structured feedback and journal matching to support quality at submission.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reviewer capacity and quality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reviewerone.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ReviewerOne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalcampus.ai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Campus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aje.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SinoScholar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MPS) explored ways to strengthen reviewer pools through better matching, recognition and AI-assisted support. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.profectusacademy.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Profectus Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Vesalius Award winner, connects here too \u2014 using real-world examples to build reviewer-like feedback into the research grant writing process.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>AI-readiness, risk awareness and trust<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: From <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cashmere.io\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cashmere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s work on preparing trusted content for LLMs to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ottosr.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otto-SR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s systematic review support and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dandelion-graph.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dandelion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s visual literature mapping, the ecosystem is thinking ahead. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/authentisci.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AuthentiSci<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another Vesalius finalist, approached this from the public trust angle \u2014 enabling <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORCID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-verified researchers to rate and contextualise science reporting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The innovations on display reflected a shared aim: to embed trust earlier, deeper and more systematically into the research process \u2014 supporting not just editors and research integrity staff, but researchers, reviewers and the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day also featured Karger\u2019s <\/span><b>Vesalius Innovation Award<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, spotlighting early\u2011stage innovation focused on trust and researcher support. Originally launched to streamline access to the version of record from discovery services, GetFTR has evolved into critical infrastructure supporting the discoverability and use of trusted scholarly content in a multitude of ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fair also created space for practical exchange. Between sessions, attendees connected with exhibitors, explored prototypes and surfaced shared challenges. In parallel, in-person <\/span><b>Research Integrity Workshops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provided case-based learning in a confidential setting \u2014 not covered in this report, but an important part of the day\u2019s impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final session, <\/span><b>From Pitch to Partnership<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explored how stakeholders assess new ventures. Investors, infrastructure leaders and acquirers shared frank insights: what works, what doesn\u2019t, and how mission-aligned startups can grow without compromising their values.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taken together, the Innovator Fair pointed to a clear direction of travel: innovation that embeds trust throughout the research lifecycle \u2014 supported by smart tools, shared infrastructure, and steady collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"day-two\"><strong>Day Two: Research Integrity Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held under the Chatham House Rule, Day Two of the programme was framed as a multi-stakeholder dialogue \u2014 to surface shared concerns, test one another\u2019s assumptions, and discuss practical pathways forward. The day kicked off with an update on the STM Integrity Hub, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stm-assoc.org\/what-we-do\/strategic-areas\/research-integrity\/integrity-hub\/the-stm-integrity-hub-in-action\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highlighting the progress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has been made in 2025, and then featured a series of panel discussions that explored various aspects of the \u201cBuilding Tomorrow\u2019s Research Integrity Framework\u201d theme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bringing together publishers, researchers, funders, institutional integrity offices, infrastructure providers and volunteer sleuths, the day focused on how to strengthen trust in research amid evolving threats and expectations. Discussions focused on research integrity, governance and operational practice, and did not cover competitively sensitive topics such as commercial terms. Three key themes emerged:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1\/ Shared Responsibility, Misaligned Incentives<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participants acknowledged that every part of the research ecosystem plays a role in upholding integrity \u2014 but also faces different incentives and pressures. From grant cycles and publication demands to institutional risk management and business models, aligning integrity incentives emerged as a long-term priority. The discussion pointed to the need for collaboration, not just isolated efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2\/ Shift Left: Trust Starts Earlier<br \/>\n<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mu-yang-11229436_its-been-quite-a-week-in-london-stm-activity-7405260543185428480-pSUt?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAADBhZkBRYM61Lfi_Q_3MmqW7SHxRR5kUEc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-38841\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/stm.offloadmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/19035058\/Screenshot-2025-12-18-at-10.35.46-PM-256x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/stm.offloadmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/19035058\/Screenshot-2025-12-18-at-10.35.46-PM-256x300.png 256w, https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/stm.offloadmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/19035058\/Screenshot-2025-12-18-at-10.35.46-PM-872x1024.png 872w, https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/stm.offloadmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/19035058\/Screenshot-2025-12-18-at-10.35.46-PM-768x901.png 768w, https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/stm.offloadmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/19035058\/Screenshot-2025-12-18-at-10.35.46-PM.png 1036w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>There was strong support for moving integrity checks earlier in the research lifecycle. By the time a publisher\u2019s integrity team gets involved, behaviours are already entrenched and corrections are very cumbersome. Funders and institutional representatives described very low numbers of formal complaints relative to portfolio size, with only a fraction upheld, and pointed to weak whistleblower protections, fear of reprisals and unclear reporting routes as key barriers. Suggested directions included treating role-modelling and local culture as central (not just formal training), exploring continuing professional development requirements for integrity awareness, and tightening channels and protections so that raising concerns is not perceived as a risk to one\u2019s career. Funders described extending grant periods, building in generous leave extensions and placing greater weight on environment and process rather than on publication counts alone. Participants, including sleuths, also called for better protections for those who raise concerns, and for local research cultures that treat integrity as a shared value embedded in everyday practice, rather than a box-ticking exercise.<\/p>\n<p><b>3\/ Upstream Provenance and Workflow Integrity<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several sessions carried forward last year\u2019s Innovation &amp; Integrity days theme of going \u201cbeyond the manuscript\u201d. New safeguards, in addition to checking manuscripts at the point of submission for indications of integrity concerns, are required to establish the veracity and authenticity of research outputs, especially in the age of (Gen)AI. Two options were discussed specifically: strengthening researcher identity verification, and establishing the authenticity of images and data through new technologies. Participants agreed that it will be increasingly challenging for detection to keep pace with manipulation as tools evolve, which requires us to focus our attention on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provenance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 capturing how and where data and images are created, and embedding that information into research workflows from the outset. Ideas included trusted research environments, data-focused peer review, and stronger signalling of provenance quality, aligned with Open Science principles. In other words, a shift from publishers investigating if something is false or fabricated, to researchers demonstrating that something is real and genuine through trustworthy workflows &#8211; requiring collaboration and new workflows throughout the research ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A Way Forward<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One clear takeaway from both days: technology can support integrity, as proven by the success of the STM Integrity Hub and the many innovators presenting their work, but it cannot guarantee it.
