The direct targets here are\u00a0<strong>policies that the administration disagrees with<\/strong>, such as environmental protections and COVID-19 precautions, but\u00a0<strong>the rhetorical target is<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>science itself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is different from, but echoes, previous efforts in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/news\/summary-secret-science-reform-act-2015\">2015<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ucs.org\/gretchen-goldman\/a-dishonest-proposal-the-house-science-committee-resurrects-epa-secret-science-nonsense-in-the-honest-act\/\">2017<\/a>\u00a0to limit EPA policymaking to data that is fully available to the public. The new order\u2019s impact on scholarly publishing is unclear, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-geyser.com\/fascist-science-is-reproducible\/\">troubling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a move that affects our community more directly, on 27 May, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/05\/27\/rfk-jr-nih-scientists-medical-journals-jama-lancet-nejm-00371349\">threatened<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>stop government scientists from publishing in major medical journals<\/strong>, claiming that these journals are \u2018corrupt\u2019 and influenced by pharmaceutical companies. He also suggested that the National Institutes of Health might create their own journals. This coincides with Environmental Health Perspectives, a prominent science journal, closing to new submissions citing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/29\/science\/science-journal-environment-trump.html\">cuts in funding<\/a>\u00a0from NIH.<\/p>\n<p>On a more promising note, in a separate interview earlier in May, NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya committed to maintaining\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/05\/14\/jay-bhattacharya-nih-chief-vaccines-covid-interview-00345488\">academic freedom<\/a>\u00a0for NIH\u2019s scientists and disavowed efforts to censor their work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 23 May, President Trump signed an executive order to \u2018restore Gold Standard Science\u2019 \u2014 but what exactly does that mean?
