Following its\u00a0announcement last month<\/a>\u00a0that the US National Institutes of Health would\u00a0implement a cap on allowable publication costs<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0associated\u00a0comments that OSTP Director\u00a0Dr. Jay\u00a0Bhattacharya made\u00a0in interviews (here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0here<\/a>), NIH has announced five potential options for limiting the amount of taxpayer money that\u00a0goes to support publishing:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Disallow all publication costs.<\/li>\n
  2. Set a limit on allowable costs per publication\u00a0(e.g., $2000).<\/li>\n
  3. Option\u00a02, but\u00a0allow\u00a0higher amounts when peer reviewers are compensated\u00a0(e.g., $3000).<\/li>\n
  4. Set a limit on the total amount of an award that can be spent on publication costs\u00a0(e.g.,\u00a00.8% of a grant).<\/li>\n
  5. Both\u00a0option\u00a02 and 4.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Their approach is outlined in a\u00a0blog post<\/a>\u00a0and in the\u00a0request for information<\/a>, which is open for\u00a0comment through 15 September<\/a>.\u00a0The RFI outlines five specific questions,\u00a0including a catch-all \u2018other\u2019 option, but also allows responses with attachments.<\/p>\n
