Amidst the ongoing issues of research integrity and paper mills, image integrity is a growing concern. The rise of generative AI poses<\/span> <\/span>significant<\/span> additional <\/span>risks<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, as it allows for the g<\/span>eneration of images and other types of data that are <\/span>very hard<\/span> — <\/span>if not impossible<\/span> —<\/span> to <\/span>detect with current technologies. For this reason, STM <\/span>funded <\/span>a<\/span> report developed by <\/span>MoreBrains<\/span><\/a> Cooperative, <\/span>looking into the <\/span><\/span>f<\/span>easibility of technical solutions for the detection of falsified images in research<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Organisational Challenges and a Collaborative Solution
\n<\/span><\/h2>\n

The report, which primarily looked at immunohistochemistry blots and microscopy images, explores current approaches to verifying image integrity, challenges and possible solutions.<\/p>\n

Through a mix of desk research and interviews with stakeholders, we found technical solutions are available to establish the authenticity of images, but there are significant challenges around standards, governance and community buy-in. To be effective, an image integrity system must be available to and accepted by all.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope that this report provides a clear overview of <\/span>possible solutions<\/span> to <\/span>establish<\/span> whether images are authentic — <\/span>an important step<\/span> in assessing the integrity of <\/span>submitted<\/span> research,” quotes Joris van Rossum, Program Director, STM Solutions. “At the same time, it makes clear that the <\/span><\/span>greatest <\/span><\/span><\/span>challenges do not lie in this technology, but in the socio-technical aspects of its implementation on a broad scale. During the coming months, this report will form the basis of discussions with several stakeholders in the research ecosystem to assess whether and to what extent the proposed solutions can be implemented.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
