Importantly, it also identifies gaps and areas where future investments are needed. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.18665\/sr.320210\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report is freely available for download on Ithaka S+R\u2019s website.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Publishers have invested heavily in shared infrastructure \u2014 at the same time, we\u2019re continuing to witness rapid change, new opportunities, and new challenges to the system,&#8221; said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hylke Koers, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chief Information Officer, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STM Solutions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In commissioning this report, we sought an independent, comprehensive study of the current landscape to provide recommendations where collective action and further investments are needed to develop and sustain a scholarly communications system that is open and trusted at scale.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the report is detailed and offers many insights, among the report&#8217;s recommendations for areas to target for further development and investment, the following key themes emerged:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to design a system that delivers both \u2018open\u2019 and \u2018trusted\u2019 at scale.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increasing presence and role of AI in scholarly communications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The importance of PIDs, metadata, and common standards in enabling a seamless user journey across different publishing platforms and discovery services on the scholarly web.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research Integrity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STM is already driving multiple initiatives addressing these themes, from our recent white paper on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stm-assoc.org\/new-white-paper-launch-generative-ai-in-scholarly-communications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI in Scholarly Communications<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stm-assoc.org\/stm-integrity-hub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STM Solutions Integrity Hub<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/united2act.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNITED2ACT<\/a>, and to our involvement in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getfulltextresearch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GetFTR<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/seamlessaccess.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SeamlessAccess<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s Next?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the coming months, STM\u00a0 will convene its members and stakeholders to collectively explore ways we can act on findings from the report. &#8220;The intent of this work is to spur thought, conversation \u2014 and ultimately, action,&#8221; said Koers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new, independently researched report by Ithaka S+R, funded by STM Solutions and six of our members, offers an overview of the essential standards and technology, including products and services, that comprise the underlying infrastructure supporting scholarly communications.
