A first of their kind, these pioneering <strong>Global Principles provide guidance for the development, deployment, and regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems and applications to ensure business opportunities and innovation can thrive within an ethical and accountable framework.<\/strong> The Global Principles for AI are aimed at ensuring publishers\u2019 continued ability to create and disseminate quality content, while facilitating innovation and the responsible development of trustworthy AI systems.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing critical dimensions relating to intellectual property, transparency, accountability, quality and integrity, fairness, safety, design, and sustainable development, the Global Principles on AI mark an unprecedented collaboration that safeguards the interests of content creators, publishers, and consumers alike.<\/p>\n<p>In the Principles, the organizations call for the responsible development and deployment of AI systems and applications, stating that these <strong>new tools must only be developed in accordance with established principles and laws that protect publishers\u2019 intellectual property, brands, consumer relationships, and investments<\/strong>. The Principles state explicitly that AI systems\u2019 \u201cindiscriminate misappropriation of our intellectual property is unethical, harmful, and an infringement of our protected rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among other things, the Global AI Principles stipulate that developers, operators, and deployers of AI systems should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Respect intellectual property rights protecting the organizations\u2019 investments in original content.<\/li>\n<li>Leverage efficient licensing models that can facilitate innovation through training of trustworthy and high-quality AI systems.<\/li>\n<li>Provide granular transparency to allow publishers to enforce their rights where their content is included in training datasets.<\/li>\n<li>Clearly attribute content to the original publishers of the content.<\/li>\n<li>Recognise publishers\u2019 invaluable role in generating high-quality content for training, surfacing and synthesising.<\/li>\n<li>Comply with competition laws and principles and ensure that AI models are not used for anti-competitive purposes.<\/li>\n<li>Promote trusted and reliable sources of information and ensure that AI generated content is accurate, correct and complete.<\/li>\n<li>Not misrepresent original works.<\/li>\n<li>Respect the privacy of users that interact with them and fully disclose the use of their personal data in AI system design, training, and use.<\/li>\n<li>Align with human values and operate in accordance with global laws.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The full Global Principles for AI, <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/stm.offloadmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/10032516\/FINAL-Global-AI-Principles-Formatted_9-5-23.pdf\">which can be found here<\/a>, elaborate on each of the points above in greater detail.<\/p>\n<p>Organizations signing onto the Global AI Principles include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AMI \u2013 Colombian News Media Association<\/li>\n<li>Asociaci\u00f3n de Entidades Period\u00edsticas Argentinas (Adepa)<\/li>\n<li>Association of Learned &amp; Professional Society Publishers<\/li>\n<li>Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Nacional de Jornais (Brazilian Newspaper Association) (ANJ)<\/li>\n<li>Czech Publishers\u2019 Association<\/li>\n<li>Danish Media Association<\/li>\n<li>Digital Content Next<\/li>\n<li>European Magazine Media Association<\/li>\n<li>European Newspaper Publishers\u2019 Association<\/li>\n<li>European Publishers Council<\/li>\n<li>FIPP<\/li>\n<li>Grupo de Diarios Am\u00e9rica<\/li>\n<li>Inter American Press Association<\/li>\n<li>Korean Association of Newspapers<\/li>\n<li>Magyar Lapkiad\u00f3k Egyes\u00fclete (Hungarian Publishers\u2019 Association)<\/li>\n<li>NDP Nieuwsmedia<\/li>\n<li>News\/Media Alliance<\/li>\n<li>News Media Association<\/li>\n<li>News Media Canada<\/li>\n<li>News Media Europe<\/li>\n<li>News Media Finland<\/li>\n<li>News Publishers\u2019 Association<\/li>\n<li>Nihon Shinbun Kyokai (The Japan Newspaper Publishers &amp; Editors Association)<\/li>\n<li>Professional Publishers Association<\/li>\n<li>STM<\/li>\n<li>World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The Principles are open to future signatories.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, STM joins 26 organizations representing thousands of creative professionals around the world, including the academic publishing sector, news, entertainment, magazine, and book publishing companies released Global Principles for Artificial Intelligence (AI).
