“The STM Association Alt Text Task & Finish Group (TFG) is excited to share its draft image-type taxonomy for scholarly images for comment and feedback. This taxonomy is a collaborative effort by members of the STM Association to develop a comprehensive classification system for images in scholarly publishing. In part, it is intended to assist authors and publishers in meeting the upcoming update to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), going into effect April 24, 2026, and other global legislation. It also contributes to the industry effort to ensure journal content is as accessible and available to as broad an audience as possible.”

In an article on growing threats to research integrity, Times Higher Education covers STM’s report Safeguarding Scholarly Communication: Publisher Practices to Uphold Research Integrity. The article describes how publishers are increasingly focused on identifying integrity issues before publication—responding to paper mills, AI-enabled fabrication, and coordinated fraud networks—while scaling up research integrity teams and collaborating on shared screening approaches.

THE highlights the STM Integrity Hub as an example of collaboration designed to improve detection capacity across publishers, while noting the continued opportunity to extend benefits to smaller publishers and those operating outside major publishing centers.

It is almost a cliché to say that AI has changed the academic publishing industry – for authors, reviewers, editors, readers, and publishers themselves. In 2023, STM published guidelines outlining ethical and practical considerations regarding the use of AI tools in the publication process. In the two years since, technology has progressed significantly, creating even more possibilities to use AI to assist the dissemination of research outputs. In particular, recent developments in generative AI (GenAI) have led to rapid expansion in the capabilities of machine tools to assist with writing, editing, formatting, and even enhancing research manuscripts with images and diagrams.

As a result, there is a need for transparency around the use of AI in research dissemination. Publishers often provide guidelines for authors to transparently declare any human assistance in manuscript preparation, for example if they have used professional language editing services.

The framework of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has, over the past decade, generated a tremendous amount of global cooperation, innovation, and support to drive transformative change within our communities. This might be attributed to the global nature of the challenges, as the SDG framework sets out to address universal issues from climate change and renewable energy to protecting our oceans and ensuring good health and well-being in our communities. While the publishing industry has been very supportive of the SDG agenda (with the launch of the SDG Publishers Compact and IPA SDG Dashboard), it can be hard to relate the specific SDG targets and measurements to what we, as academic publishers, can truly influence.

STM has joined the Association of College and Research Libraries, the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of University Presses, and the Society for Scholarly Publishing in a unified call to safeguard the future of research.

Published in The Scholarly Kitchen, our joint op-ed responds to escalating uncertainty in the United States, including sweeping federal funding cuts and reductions in the federal research workforce, with a shared statement of values and intent.

While this statement centers on the U.S. context, the values at its core—trust, continuity, and scholarly independence—are essential across the global research ecosystem.

Though our sectors bring different perspectives, we are aligned in our belief that the infrastructure supporting discovery, scholarship, and access to knowledge must be protected.

This piece marks a first step—and signals a broader commitment to collaboration and action.

How do we maintain trust in science in an age of disinformation, political polarization, and rapid AI development?

In a wide-ranging interview with The Bookseller, STM CEO Caroline Sutton outlines why trusted research is a global public good—and how publishers are on the front lines of protecting it.

She touches on:
• AI and the future of research standards
• Rebuilding trust across strained political systems

A timely interview with our own Hylke Koers in Retraction Watch highlights STM’s work on strengthening research integrity in scholarly publishing.

With fraud and paper mills exploiting gaps in editorial systems, STM has developed a Researcher Identity Verification Framework—a flexible, inclusive approach to help journals and institutions verify researcher identities more reliably.

Originally released in March, the framework is now open for community consultation, and we welcome your input (by May 31). This work, produced by STM’s Richard Northover, aims to support integrity without adding unnecessary barriers.

A new Nature Magazine survey of 5,000+ researchers shows there’s no clear consensus on how and when generative AI should be used in writing and reviewing scholarly papers — or how that use should be disclosed.

To help bring clarity, STM has released a draft report: Classifying AI Use in Manuscript Preparation — that offers a clear framework to help publishers define, evaluate, and guide the transparent use of AI in manuscript preparation.

As STM Solution’s Program Director Joris van Rossum notes in the article: “We hope that publishers — and the wider ecosystem — will adopt the terminology.”
